Evidence-based practice (EBP) is a “clinical decision-making that considers the best available evidence; the context in which the care is delivered; client preference; and the professional judgment of the health professional” (Pearson, Wiechula, Court, & Lockwood, 2005, p. 209).

EBP promotes high-quality health care, improves patient experience and health outcomes, and reduces health care costs (Melnyk, GallagherFord, Long, & FineoutOverholt, 2014). Therefore, the adoption, implementation, and sustainment of EBP in healthcare organizations are becoming increasingly important (Apóstolo, Cardoso, & Rodrigues, 2016). In addition, national and international organizations such as the World Health Organization (WHO, 2004, 2015), the International Council of Nurses (ICN, 2012), the Institute of Medicine (IoM, 2000, 2001, 2009), the Portuguese National Directorate General of Health, following the Portuguese National Health Plan 2012-2016 (Ministry of Health, 2012), and the Portuguese Nursing Regulator (Ordem dos Enfermeiros, 2006) recommend the adoption of EBP. These organizations believe that it simplifies decision-making, reduces uncertainty, risk, and variability, and improves the quality of care. However, due to the gaps between research, practice, and policies, EBP is still not the standard of care delivered worldwide (Melnyk et al., 2014).

The Johns Hopkins Nursing Evidence-Based Practice Model is one of the conceptual models developed to support the implementation and sustainment of EBP in health care.
