On foot

The main points of interest in the historic city centre can be visited on foot, such as the Monastery of Santa Clara-a-Velha, the Santa Cruz Church, the Almedina Arch and the lively streets of Downtown Coimbra full of traditional small businesses. From Downtown to Uptown and the University of Coimbra, the streets are quite steep, but the overwhelming views over the river Mondego and the visit to the Old Cathedral and the former Paço das Escolas are rewarding. The riverside parks and gardens are also pleasant places for walking.
