International student - Application requirements

1 - WHO CAN BENEFIT FROM THE INTERNATIONAL STUDENT STATUTE?

An international student is a student who does not have Portuguese nationality.

The provisions of the previous paragraph do not apply to:

  1. Nationals of a Member State of the European Union;
  2. Family members of Portuguese nationals or nationals of a Member State of the European Union, whatever their nationality;
  3. Those who are not nationals of a Member State of the European Union, and who are not covered by the previous paragraph, but who have been legally resident in Portugal for more than two consecutive years on 1 January of the year in which they intend to enroll in higher education, as well as their children who are legally resident with them (the period of residence with a residence permit for study purposes is not taken into account);
  4. Those who, on 1 January of the year in which they intend to enter higher education, benefit from a status of equality of rights and obligations granted by an international treaty between the Portuguese State and the State of which they are nationals;
  5. Foreign students attending a Portuguese higher education institution within the framework of an international mobility program to complete part of a cycle of studies at a foreign higher education institution with which the Portuguese institution has concluded an exchange agreement for that purpose.

For the purposes of point b), family members of Portuguese nationals or nationals of a member state of the European Union, regardless of their nationality (under the terms of Law no. 37/2006, of August 9), are:

  • The spouse of a Union citizen;
  • The partner with whom a Union citizen lives in a de facto union, constituted under the terms of the law, or with whom the Union citizen has a permanent relationship duly certified by the competent authority of the member state where they reside;
  • A direct descendant who is under the age of 21 or who is a dependent of a Union citizen, as well as a spouse or partner within the meaning of the previous sub-paragraph;
  • A direct ascendant who is a dependent of a Union citizen, as well as that of the spouse or partner within the meaning of sub-paragraph (ii).

 

2 - WHAT ARE THE CONDITIONS FOR ACCESS AND ADMISSION?

Secondary education diploma or equivalent

The following students can apply for admission and enrollment in the cycle of studies of the Undergraduate Nursing Degree of ESEnfC:

  1. Holders of qualifications granting access to higher education in the country of origin (the validation of those qualifications is the responsibility of the competent authority of the country where the qualification was obtained);
  2. Holders of a Portuguese secondary education diploma or legally equivalent (the equivalence of qualifications is established by Order no. 224/2006, of 8 March and Order no. 699/2006, of 12 July)

 

Exams and grades required

  • If the applicant has completed the Portuguese secondary education or has taken the exams as a self-proposed student, the following weightings are applied:

Biology and Geology – 100%

or

Biology and Geology and Physics and Chemistry – 50% / 50%

or

Biology and Geology and Mathematics – 50% / 50%

  • If the applicant has completed secondary education in the Brazilian system and has taken the Exames Nacionais do Ensino Médio (ENEM), the following weighting is applied:

Writing – 30%

Mathematics and its Technologies – 35%

Natural Sciences and its Technologies – 35%

  • If the applicants have taken entrance examinations in other education systems, a Jury will be appointed to conduct a curricular evaluation, adapting the requirements foreseen in the previous paragraphs.

The Portuguese entrance examinations can be made in Portugal or at a a Portuguese school abroad.

The deadlines for registration in those exams are published annually by the DGES - Directorate-General for Higher Education in Portugal.

The eligible grades of the entrance examinations are the ones obtained in the current civil year or in the three civil years previous to the application.

The grades for entrance must be expressed on a 0-200 scale.

The minimum admission score is 100.

 

Knowledge of the Portuguese language

1. The enrollment in the Undergraduate Nursing Degree requires independent proficiency in the Portuguese level (B2 level of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages).

2. The international applicants who have only an intermediate level of proficiency in Portuguese (B1 level of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages) may apply to this special competition as long as they agree to attend an Annual Portuguese Language Course as specified in point 5 below.

3. Exceptionally, international applicants without B1 level proficiency in Portuguese may also apply as long as they agree to attend an intensive Portuguese language course before they enroll in the cycle of studies to which they applied:

  1. when applicants are selected, they have to enroll, make a pre-registration, and pay an initial fee associated with the registration, in accordance with the list of tuition fees and other costs;
  2. The confirmation of enrollment at ESEnfC depends on the achievement of the B1 level of proficiency in Portuguese;
  3. If the confirmation referred to in sub-paragraph b) is not obtained, the placement of the applicant is delayed one year, during which the applicant has to attend an Annual Portuguese Language Course and the payment referred to in sub-paragraph a) is transferred to the student’s account and its reimbursement is not applicable. The enrollment in the cycle of studies is always subject to the applicant’s successful completion of the language course;
  4. Students can use their student account balance to make any necessary payments to ESEnfC within a maximum period of 3 years;
  5. When the enrollment is not confirmed and applicants are still interested in enrolling in the cycle of studies, they must make a new application to a new special competition.

4. The applicants who have not completed their secondary education in the Portuguese language must:

  1. Present a self-declaration stating that they have a B1 level of proficiency in Portuguese or higher;
  2. Present a DEPLE (Elementary Diploma of Portuguese as a Foreign Language) or a certificate of B1 level of proficiency issued by an accredited language school in Portugal.

5. The applicants who have not completed their secondary education in Portuguese and do not present a DIPLE (Intermediate Diploma of Portuguese as a Foreign Language, B2 level), or a B2 level of proficiency certificate issued by an accredited language school in Portugal must agree to attend an Annual Portuguese Language Course:

  1. This course can be attended during the first year of the cycle of studies;
  2. All grades will remain provisional until a certificate of B1 level of proficiency is issued by an accredited language school in Portugal.

 

Prerequisites

 

1. The required prerequisite is part of Group A - Interpersonal Communication: Absence of mental, sensory, or motor disabilities that severely impair functional and communicative abilities, thus hindering self-learning or the learning of others. A medical certificate must be submitted at the time of enrollment. It is issued by a physician registered with the Portuguese Medical Association or by a physician of the ESEnfC Health Service.

2. Applicants who, at the time of application, are unable to provide proof of the prerequisite must self-declare that they do not suffer from any mental, sensory, or motor disability that seriously affects their ability to function and communicate interpersonally or impedes their learning or that of others. To confirm this, students must submit a medical certificate to the ESEnfC Academic Services no later than three months after the start of the study period:

  1. The non-confirmation of the prerequisites implies the cancellation of enrollment;
  2. The initial payment associated with the enrolment and registration of the students (as according to the established tuitions and fees) is not reimbursed in the cases in which the enrollment is cancelled, under the terms of sub-paragraph a), and that amount is transferred to the student’s account at ESEnfC;
  3. Students can use their student account balance to make any necessary payments to ESEnfC within a maximum period of 3 years..

 

3 - APPLICANTS FROM PORTUGUESE-SPEAKING COUNTRIES

  • These applicants do not require confirmation of their Portuguese language skills;
  • Applicants from Brazil need the ENEM with a weighting higher than 500 (Writing: 30% + Mathematics and its Technologies: 35% + Natural Sciences and its Technologies: 35%);
  • Applicants from Brazil, the Republic of Cabo Verde, and Angola may conduct at least a semester of mobility in the country of origin, integrated in an international mobility program with the Universities of that country.
