ESEnfC and SMTUC offer Safe Transportation during the nightime concerts of Queima das Fitas

On April 29th, the Nursing School of Coimbra (ESEnfC) and the Coimbra Municipality Urban Transport Services (SMTUC) signed a protocol which will make it possible for students of the ESEnfC participating in the concerts integrated in the festivities of the Queima das Fitas to return home safely. In this way the School intends to prevent situations such as driving under the influence of alcohol or, ultimately, prevent accidents and injuries.

Bearing in mind that these academic festivities gather special conditions for an abusive consumption of alcoholic drinks, which in some cases may result in serious intoxications, the SMTUC continue to provide a bus line – similarly to what they have been doing for three years – but, from 2008 on, there is an additional advantage for the users, offered by the ESEnfC.

The ESEnfC has the responsibility to organise the monitoring of the students who will use the bus.

This support will be provided by a students and a teacher of the School or a Nurse from one of the institutions which are involved in the project “Before you get Burned” (Regional Health Administration – Centre and the Institute on Drugs and Drug Addiction), promoted by the ESEnfC. The goal of this project is to prevent excessive alcohol consumption, as well as the risks associated to this consumption, during the academic festivities.

On May 4-11, from 00:30 a.m. to 05.30 a.m. (last departure), the SMTUC provide a free bus line, available for everyone, with an interval of 30 minutes and an identical itinerary to the Line No. 24T, with the schedule in Parque Dr. Manuel Braga and Bairro Norton de Matos.

The protocol was signed by the President of the Directing Board of the ESEnfC, Professora Maria da Conceição Bento, and the administrator-representative of the SMTUC, Manuel de Oliveira.

At this meeting, both parts agreed that it was important to expand this “Safe Transportation” to the left margin. The administrator-representative of the SMTUC mentioned that they were available to analyse other types of support, aiming at facilitating the mobility of students of the ESEnfC, who have classes in both campuses.

The “safe” circuit

The bus line offered by the SMTUC    has the following circuit: Parque Dr. Manuel Braga, Av. da Lousã, Av. Urbano Duarte, Av. Mendes Silva, Roundabout of Quinta da Nora (Municipal Firefighters), Rua D. Pedro Cristo, Rua Carlos Seixas, Rua Daniel de Matos, Rua Vasco da Gama, Rua Mouzinho de Albuquerque (Bairro Norton de Matos), Rua de Moçambique, Bandeiras, Rotunda Jorge Anjinho, Roundabout of Solum, Rua Gen. Humberto Delgado, Rua dos Combatentes, Arcos do Jardim, Praça da República, Av. Sá da Bandeira, Rua da Sofia, Rua João Machado, Av. Fernão de Magalhães e Av. Emídio Navarro.
