Before you get Burned… during the Latada (Tin Can Parade)

All the freshmen of the Nursing School of Coimbra (ESEnfC) are invited to participate tomorrow night (after 7 p.m.) in an information activity within the scope of the project "Before you Get Burned".

The Project aims at preventing the excessive consumption of psychoactive substances (namely alcohol) during the academic festivities - starting with the Tin Can Parade, from October 23rd to 29th and continuing with the Queima das Fitas - as well as reducing the damages associated to that type of behaviours and promoting fun without risks.

After an information session, at 7 p.m. on Campus B of the ESEnfC, about 300 new students are expected to go around the city participating in a series of games in order to demonstrate that they have acquired the knowledge passed on by teachers Augusto Pinto e Fernando Mendes (Institute of Drugs and Drug Addiction) and by teacher Irma Brito (ESEnfC).

This initiative was organised by the Praxis Commission and the Workshop on Expressivity of the Student Association of the ESEnfC and it starts in Campus B and ends in Praça da República.

The series of games is scheduled to begin at 10 p.m. in Largo da Portagem and the students will have to stop in seven positions: Largo da Portagem, Arco de Almedina, Sé Velha, Sé Nova, Porta Férrea, Escadas Monumentais and Praça da República. In each position, the students will have a different task and will be scored (0-5). These tasks will be carried out by teams of freshmen.

For example, freshmen will have to answer to theoretical questions on alcohol and STDs, as well as simulate the effects of the consumption of psychoactive substances.

A freshman will be required to simulate alcohol intoxication and another student had to provide first aid care.

Almost reaching the end of the activity, the Peer Educators will assess the presence of alcohol in the blood and the ones who drink the most will be penalised.

In the last position, freshmen will have to present a piece of music with lyrics and choreography, previously rehearsed. The only rule is the presence of the expression "Before you get burned" in the song. The following prizes will be awarded: Best Song/Worst Song and Best Choreography/Worst Choreography.
