«We concluded that we are a very good school, but we want to be a school of excellence».
These words by the President of the Directing Board of the ESEnfC, Professora Maria da Conceição Bento, correspond to the vision that the educative community has from the present and the actions and targets to be accomplished during the next years, according to the Strategic Plan 2009-2013: Shaping the future together.

In this document, whose summary was presented in the official opening ceremony of the classes (9th October), it is stated that the ESEnfC wants, in 2013, to be "the first to attract students for the three cycles of training in Nursing».
In order to achieve that, besides the permanent pedagogical training of the teachers, the ESEnfC will create an e-learning platform and a portal of training in health, as well as improve the articulation between the laboratorial practices and the health institutions.
However, this ambitious project has many other goals, for example the development of the Research Unit as a centre leader of networks of production, dissemination and application of Nursing knowledge, the promotion of the recognition of the School at an international level and the implementation of a total quality system.
From the examples given, we point out the beginning of curricular units in English, the support to the training of young researchers and the increase of the participation of the whole educative community in the School's activities.
This participation was pointed out by Professora Conceição Bento who, instead of listing the results accomplished last year, considered "extremely fair" to thank the people who made them possible in areas such as research and dissemination of knowledge, activities of extension to the community, mobility, or the reorganisation of the services to increasingly centre them on the students.
For Professora Conceição Bento, the people who are part of the educative community of the School «are the greatest wealth of our institution». They are a «young, dynamic, committed and qualified critical mass (…), capable of transforming the ESEnfC into one of the best Nursing education institutions in the world».
After greeting the whole educative community, the president of the Directing Board welcomed the 320 new students because, from a universe of 2675 candidates to the School, they belong to the group of those who fulfilled that desire.
Professor Doutor João Rogério Valença Vieira, president of the Scientific Board of the ESEnfC, gave a lecture on "The challenges of Bologna", in the year when, for the first time, all study plans are in accordance with the reform of higher education currently taking place in Europe.
