The professor of the Nursing School of Coimbra analysed the way in which the interchange of information is carried out between health professionals and the oncology patient; what is said, what is not said, why it is said and how it is said.
According to the conclusions of the study by Professor José Carlos Martins, developed at the Portuguese Oncology Institute in Coimbra, the somewhat paternalist idea that it is better not to say everything to the patient is wrong. |
Professor José Carlos says that when patients are fully informed about their illness «we promote their autonomy, with a positive influence on anxiety, depression, the perception of the health condition, morbidity and the satisfaction with health care». |
