Rota das Tabernas / Taverns Route

The City Council carried out a comprehensive survey of the taverns in Coimbra which were meeting places between generations of businesspeople, and students. These taverns, evidence of long-lasting roots, were invigorated, restored and improved. This effort has led to the creation of the “Rota das Tabernas de Coimbra” (“Coimbra Taverns Route”)
Taverns are typical establishments of the past that played a key role in the community, a testimony of the economic, social cultural and even political life of the population.
They thrived as food retail houses, namely local and regional products, with particular emphasis on wine, becoming centers of conviviality for working classes. Particularly important during the pre-industrial age, taverns have also multiplied thanks to the academic life in towns and cities with teaching institutions.
Taverns prospered in Coimbra, spreading across the city in a perfect blend between all the different peculiarities that characterize these commercial establishments. They have witnessed key historical moments, displaying the experiences and leading figures of the generations that used them and that are part of the History of Coimbra.
In an effort to preserve the urban identity and memory, this legacy must carry on and resist to the devastating avalanche of snack bars, coffee houses, pubs, and guesthouses.

Guided tour around the old taverns in Downtown, with dinner included in “Tasquinha da Paulita” (around 8 p.m.), consisting of:
Sopa à Lavrador (vegetable soup with red beans and chorizo); Cozido à Portuguesa ( a stew of different meats and vegetables); Arroz Doce (rice pudding); Vinho do lavrador (traditional wine); and coffee.

GARRY BURTON E QUINTETO SANDRO NORTON | Música Jazz
