Machado de Castro Museum

This museum is the most important permanent institution in Coimbra. It is located in Coimbra’s uptown, near the University and the Sé Nova cathedral.

The National Museum Machado de Castro opened its doors to the public on October 11th, 1913, in the bishop’s palace. Remains from the cloister and cryptoporticus (1st century) are still visible, the latter being the most important Roman monument preserved in Portugal. The museum has a vast collection of religious art, archeological findings in gold, silver, and ceramic, and paintings from convents, monasteries, and archeological sites from Coimbra and other places in Portugal.

Visit the historical area of the University of Coimbra (World Heritage)

The University of Coimbra holds a vast and rich historical, architectural and cultural patrimony, which constitutes a precious common heritage of Humanity. On 22 June 2013, it was recognized by UNESCO as World Heritage site, an award that, much more than reflecting the architectural value of the Coimbra University Complex, highlights the universal value of the Portuguese Culture and Language and acknowledges the central role of Portugal in the history of the world. Its 18th-century Library, located at the Royal Palace of the University of Coimbra, in the courtyard of the Faculty of Law, has a strong rococo style and is recognized as one of the most original and fascinating European baroque libraries. Apart from being a research site for many students, it is also used for concerts, exhibitions, and other cultural events.
