Coimbra University holds a vast and rich historical, architectural and cultural patrimony, which constitutes a precious common heritage of Humanity. On June 22nd 2013, it was recognized by UNESCO as World Patrimony, an award that, much more than reflecting the architectural value of Coimbra University Complex, highlights the universal value of the Portuguese Culture and Language and acknowledges the central role that Portugal has had in the world’s development.
Coimbra University has approximately 20,000 students and one of the largest communities of international students in Portugal. Its Joanine Library from the 18th century, located at the Palace of the Schools of Coimbra University, in the yard of the Law Faculty of Coimbra University, presents a highly enhanced rococo style and it is recognized as one of the most original and fascinating European baroque libraries. Apart from being the research site for many students, this place is also commonly used for concerts, exhibitions and other cultural events.
