The Maternity Hospital Dr. Daniel de Matos is part of the Coimbra Hospital and University Centre.
It has a maximum of 110 beds and also an Autonomous Emergency Room, Outpatient Consultation, Neonatology Unit, Delivery Room, Operating Room, Maternal-Fetal Medicine Unit and Postpartum Unit.
The Maternity Hospital Dr. Daniel de Matos is part of the Maternal and Child Referral Network. It is both a perinatal support hospital and a differentiated perinatal support hospital.

Visit to the Coimbra Hospital and University Centre – Pediatric Hospital

The Pediatric Hospital is part of the Coimbra Hospital and University Centre.
It has been granted university status through a protocol signed with the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Coimbra, and is innovative in diverse areas of pediatrics. Throughout the years, it has proven to be a very prestigious unit of assistance and a centre of national reference in terms of the pediatric treatment of complex or rare pathologies.
The premises where it was located up until recently were used for many different purposes throughout history: first it was a convent, later on an asylum for the blind and the cripple, and then a hospital-sanatorium for women and children with tuberculosis. When its mission in this area of care came to an end, and after going through significant difficulties, the reconversion and adaptation of the building into a hospital for children happened in June 1977.
The new building of the Pediatric Hospital, which was recently inaugurated, has distinct areas to care for younger children and teenagers up to the age of 18, and provides for a population of 500 000 users.
Telemedicine, especially associated to pediatric cardiology, is widely expanding in the Community of Portuguese-speaking Countries.

Visit to the Health Centre Norton de Matos

Health centres are the basic units of the National Health Service that receive and provide health care to the population. They have a permanent interdisciplinary health team composed of physicians, nurses, other health professionals and logistic and administrative support.
It is the health service closest to the citizen where the health and well-being of its users is promoted.
In the health centre, care is provided to adults, children, adolescents and older people, users’ health is promoted and monitored, early diagnosis activities are developed, family planning, follow-up of pregnant women and children’s development, health education in schools, homes and in the health centre itself. This Health Centre is responsible for Public Health in its area.
The Health Centre Norton de Matos is located in the City of Coimbra and its influence area is mainly urban. It is part of the Group of Health Centres of Baixo Mondego I which is composed of 7 health centres.

Visit to the Portuguese Institute of Oncology - Coimbra Centre- Francisco Gentil, EPE

The Portuguese Institute of Oncology - Coimbra Centre- Francisco Gentil, E.P.E. (IPOCFG, E.P.E.) is a hospital unit that is integrated in the network of healthcare provision of the National Health System and the type-A platform of the oncology referral network. It has a major responsibility in the diagnosis and treatment of cancer in the Central Region of Portugal, which has a population of approximately 2,500,000 inhabitants.
The IPOCFG, E.P.E. has 231 beds, which already include the “Hotel” for patients, an innovative structure in terms of healthcare provision in Portugal.
This leading position in the oncology referral network grants it with a significant amount of differentiated technological and human resources. It currently has around 900 collaborators.
The visit will begin with a presentation of the institution and its services and followed by a visit to various units: Estomaterapia, Unidade da Dor, Radioterapia (Piso 0), Hospital de Dia, Cuidados Paliativos.

Visit to the Coimbra Hospital and University Centre – Maternity Hospital Bissaya Barreto

The Maternity Hospital Bissaya Barreto is one of the health institutions which belong to the Coimbra Hospital and University Centre.
Inaugurated on April 28th 1963, this institution has always aimed to provide health care to mothers and to ensure the child’s follow-up and development. It started operating in a building that was built for this effect, and also provided Social Care with a boarding school for children at risk, a nursery school and a kindergarten. At the time, Bissaya Barreto wanted to organize a maternal-child assistance institution where one could find a balance between the “scientific spirit, the social spirit and the spirit of charity…”, as was expected in a hospital prepared for the future.
Located on the right bank of the river, the Maternity Hospital Bissaya Barreto is part of the Maternal and Child Referral Network, and it is a hospital which provides both perinatal support and differentiated perinatal support.
