Masters in Maternal Health and Obstetric Nursing

In this CU it is intended that students attain the following objectives:
To describe the procedures to be carried out in an emergency situation;
To identify situations involving obstetric and perinatal urgency/emergency;
To differentiate situations involving obstetric and perinatal urgency/emergency;
To characterise situations involving obstetric and perinatal urgency/emergency;
To describe procedures to be adopted in situations involving obstetric and perinatal urgency/emergency.
These objectives should contribute to the development of EE-ESMO Common Skills and the following EE-ESMO Specific Skills:
H2-Caring for women within the family and community during the prenatal period;
H3-Caring for women within the family and community during labour;
H4-Caring for women within the family and community during the postnatal period;
H7-Caring for the target group (women of childbearing age) within the community.

This curricular unit will ideally make use of theoretical-practical classes, as well as simulation and training. The
area developed is obstetric and perinatal urgencies and emergencies.

To achieve the stated objectives all course contents are considered.
For skill H2, course contents 1, 2.1 and 2.2 and 6 are considered.
For skill H3, course contents 2.3 and 2.4, 3, 4, 5 and 6 are considered.
For skill H4, course contents 2.5 are considered.
For skill H7, all course contents are considered.

An active methodology is focused on, with the use of questioning, explanation and demonstration, emphasising the development of the ability to analyse, critique and resolve problems in teacher/student and student/student interaction.
The strategies used will preferably be simulation and training in the laboratory, alternating with lectures and group projects that contribute to resolving problematic situations students are put in.
The resources are the ESEnfC laboratories where simulations are used and various obstetric simulators material in accordance with clinical situations, in addition to teaching materials, library collections and Internet access, as well as a teaching staff made up of specialist teachers in ESMO.
Evaluation is carried out through a test assessing knowledge at the end of the CU, with the final grade translated into a classification scale from 0 to 20 points.

It is envisaged that students will be able to identify various obstetric and neonatal urgencies/emergencies, building a body of knowledge that will enable them to differentiate between the various urgency/emergency obstetric and neonatal situations and be able to implement measures to reduce maternal and foetal risk. In this way, the theoretical-practical and practical sessions require student involvement in their learning, through the analysis, reflection and interaction, leading to being able to differentiate between the various urgency/emergency obstetric and neonatal situations.
The body of knowledge developed in theoretical-practical and practical classes, which will involve not only training but mainly simulation, will allow a body of knowledge that will contribute to the formation of nurses capable of a range of responses, thus contributing to high quality obstetric nursing.
