Sigma Theta Tau International: Phi Xi chapter has new officers

Professor Maria de Lurdes Lomba is the new President of the Nursing School of Coimbra’s Phi Xi Chapter of Sigma Theta Tau International. Professor João Alves Apóstolo was appointed Vice-President, and Sofia Pires Macedo, RN, from the Aldara Hospital and Medical Center in Saudi Arabia, was appointed Counselor.

In addition, the chapter is also composed of nurses from Hospital São Francisco Xavier (Lisbon), Coimbra Hospital and University Center, and Coimbra Surgical Center.

A The induction ceremony of the new Phi Xi chapter members will take place on 9 October 2017, as part of ESEnfC's official opening of the academic year.

This Chapter was created in September 2011 and, with “an impact still somewhat limited to the Coimbra region”, the geographical extension of the chapter is “one of the major objectives” of the two-year term of Professor Lomba.

According to the ESEnfC Professor, who succeeds Professor Aida Cruz Mendes (ESEnfC Vice-President), “we intend for the chapter to gain greater visibility at a national level”. To this end, it will be disseminated among teachers, nursing students, and nurses. The chapter proposes the “admission of new members with eligibility criteria, namely their outstanding performance, leadership qualities or excellent academic performance in the case of students”.

With its headquarters in the USA, STTI aims to promote nursing leadership and the development of the nursing profession in clinical practice, education, and research with a view to improving the health of the populations.

According to Professor Lomba, “we intend to distribute, collect, and use information among the [Chapter] members in order to implement relevant activities that will meet their expectations, both professionally and socially”.

On the other hand, it intends to ensure “that all members receive updated and relevant information about the tools provided by STTI to its members (virtual library, scientific journal, website ...) about charity and solidarity initiatives, research and leadership activities, and scientific events conducted by the chapter and the honor society at the national, European, and international levels”.

The President of the Phi Xi Chapter ensured that the ceremony of recognition of the chapter members’ performance, leadership or creativity will take place every year.
