PURPOSE OF THE DEGREE
The purpose of the Postgraduate Specialization Degree in Mental Health and Psychiatric Nursing, whose study plan is published in Decree No. 235/2016 of August 30th, is to train nurses able to provide specialized care in the area of mental health and psychiatric nursing. 

 
DEGREE OBJECTIVES
To accomplish the main learning objectives, at the end of the degree, students are expected to be able:

1.To value mental health in the integral development of the human being;
2.To understand the individual from a contextual perspective taking into account transculturality and diversity;
3.To identify the responses of individuals, families, groups and communities to the life and health-illness processes;
4.To design, plan, implement, and assess nursing care specialized in mental health and psychiatric nursing to individuals, families, groups, and communities throughout the life-cycle;
5.To participate in the design, organization, planning, and implementation of health programs/projects aimed at improving the population’s well-being and health-related quality of live;
6.To participate in the planning and management of care and health resources;
7.To contribute to the development of nursing in general and psychiatric and mental health nursing in particular, namely through research, education and training;
8.To give technical-scientific opinions on mental health and psychiatric nursing.
 
PROFILE OF COMPETENCIES TO BE DEVELOPED
The degree should help students acquire the competencies of Specialist Nurses, as proposed by the Ordem dos Enfermeiros in Regulation no. 122/2011, (DR 2nd series, part E no. 35/ 2011, of 18 February):
-Competencies in the field of professional, ethical and legal responsibility;
-Competencies in the field of continuous quality improvement;
-Competencies in the field of healthcare management;
-Competences in the field of professional learning.

Students should also acquire the competencies of the Specialist Nurses in Mental Health, as proposed by the Ordem dos Enfermeiros in Regulation no. 129/2011, (DR 2nd series, part E no. 35/2011, of 18 February):
-Holds a high level of self-knowledge and self-awareness as a person and as a nurse as a result of self-knowledge experiences and processes, and personal and professional development;
-Cares for the individual throughout his/her life-cycle, family, groups and community in the optimization of mental health;
-Helps the individual, throughout the life-cycle, integrated in the family, groups and community, to recover his/her mental health by using the specific dynamics of each context;
-Provides psychotherapeutic, sociotherapeutic, psychossocial and psychoeducational care to the individual throughout their life-cycle, mobilizing the individual, family, group or community context and dynamics so as to maintain, improve, and recover health.
 
CURRICULAR STRUCTURE
The degree is divided into three semesters in an annual curricular structure and corresponds to 90 credits.

DEGREE ORGANIZATION

The programme is organized and managed by the Scientific-Pedagogical Unit of Mental Health and Psychiatric Nursing. The curricular units are coordinated and taught by ESEnfC teachers and guest teachers in the case of curricular units that are integrated into other scientific areas, with the possible collaboration of guest teachers and national and international experts in the scientific area. 

Student guidance, supervision and assessment is a responsibility of the teachers of the Scientific-Pedagogical Unit of Mental Health and Psychiatric Nursing who are specialist nurses in mental health and psychiatric nursing, with the collaboration of specialist nurses in mental health and psychiatric nursing working in several clinical settings and with recognized work in the area of specialization.
