Cyborgs and Biotechnologies: New Frontiers of Caring - 1st International Colloquium on the Philosophy of Caring

In recent decades, health biotechnologies, associated with information and communication technologies, have increased exponentially within the social fabric, profoundly changing how health care are understood and implemented. The integration of technology in nursing care implies not only a transfer of technological apps and systems of high intensity and their use in clinical practice but also a transformation of the very essence of Caring.

The new thinking possibilities brought about by the impact of biotechnologies on the health area, digital artefacts, computer systems and the cyborgization of the body and the human being in the Caring processes are translated into new conceptual paradoxes. What does Caring mean? How to care for a human being as a body-connected to technological artefacts? How to care for a digital hybrid?

The Nursing School of Coimbra (Scientific Pedagogical Unit of Fundamental Nursing) intends to contribute to the training of health professionals capable of reflection and of integrating technological approaches in the integral care of the individual.

For this purpose, we are organising a colloquium to share and rediscover the meaning of Caring as the essence of nursing, from the philosophical approach to the issues of technique and technology in the reconfiguration of the human being.

This scientific meeting occurs within the scope of the Structuring Project: History and Epistemology of Nursing and Health, Associated Study “Caring in Nursing: Cyborgs, Biotechnologies and Digital Care" from the UICISA:E.

This meeting is open to researchers, professionals and students from the areas of Health and Health Technologies, Philosophy, Anthropology, Social Sciences, among others.
