A total of 106 participants attended the International Meeting “Challenges in the Implementation of Training in Smoking Cessation” and parallel meetings on 11 and 12 March, under the European project INSTrUCT - Innovative e-learning educational resource to improve Smoking Cessation knowledge and skills among HealthCare degrees in Higher Education, of which the Nursing School of Coimbra (ESEnfC) is part.

In this hybrid event (face-to-face at the facilities of the Health Sciences Research Unit: Nursing- UICISA: E, affiliated to the ESEnfC, but also via videoconference), an online teaching and learning resource was presented: INSTrUCT. This resource is aimed at students in health areas and aims to reduce tobacco consumption, which is responsible for nearly 700,000 deaths every year in Europe and 8 million deaths worldwide.
Francisco Frias, ESEnfC student who shared his experience as a student of the INSTrUCT course, "highlighted the virtual scenarios and the debriefing (oral report), which provide students an opportunity to experience real-life situations in a virtual context," says the organization of the meeting.
Led by the Tobacco Control Unit of the Catalan Institute of Oncology, and with funding from the ERASMUS + program, INSTrUCT has already been tested among a 1,000 medical and nursing students at the seven European universities and higher education institutions (three from Spain, two from Belgium, one from the UK, and one from Portugal) that are partners in this project.
Available in four languages (English, French, Spanish, and Portuguese), this educational resource is free of charge, and the consortium that developed it aims to make it available in the largest number of higher education health institutions in Europe, for implementation in their curricula.
Despite the high number of deaths due to tobacco consumption, "28% of European adults are smokers, implying the risk of maintaining and even increasing the burden of tobacco-related diseases on the European continent," reads the rationale of the INSTrUCT project, which has the collaboration of ESEnfC professor Tereza Barroso.
