Participation in the Senior University surpasses expectations

The partnership of the Nursing School of Coimbra with the Socio-Cultural Multipurpose Centre in São Martinho regarding the Project Senior University has been a complete success.

There are 24 students attending the first edition of the inaugural course on “Healthy Aging/Culture and Citizenship”. The initial number of vacancies available for this course was 15.

The Senior University, different from the typical senior university, admits candidates aged 55 and over.

The primary goal of this project is to make it possible for seniors, starting with the ones who have retired early, “to remain useful, develop their self-esteem and acquire knowledge and skills in order to actively participate in society”, as Professora Maria de Lurdes Almeida, one of the course coordinators, explains.

As an example, those who did not have the opportunity to acquire skills in the area of information technologies may now learn how to create an email or search the Internet.

Senior students will also practice physical exercise and walk around the city, getting to know historical and cultural spaces as well as green spaces.

“The sooner” this population “starts promoting its active aging, the better quality of life it will have”, adds Professora Maria de Lurdes Almeida.

Through the promotion of a non-formal education, the ESEnfC also intends to encourage the participation of these senior students in cultural and citizenship activities.

As stated by Professora Paula Cordeiro, also responsible for the Senior University, “the curricular units of the course make it possible for candidates to receive training on important areas of service to society, such as voluntary work, which, in most cases in our country, is being done by adults or young elderly”.

Therefore, this training aims at promoting the development of the two first health factors for the elderly, according to the WHO: Self-Esteem and Meaning in Life.

The course is based on four subjects: “Information Technologies”, “Aging, Society and Citizenship”, “Active Aging/More Health” and Local and Regional History”.
