Virtual Hospital

From 4th to 6th June 2008, partners of five European countries discussed at the Nursing School of Coimbra (ESEnfC) the creation of an “online” learning support which allows the student, during the training at the School, to develop clinical practices in Nursing.

This discussion was integrated into the 2nd Seminar on the Virtual Hospital project. There is a pedagogical multimedia instrument being developed within this project, capable of multiplying the opportunities of learning in a simulated professional context.

In this structure, which uses the Information and Communication Technologies in Nursing, the students may have access to real clinical cases and complex information presented under many ways (text, audio, photos, video…) and as close as possible to the reality that they will encounter in their professional life.

In the Virtual Hospital, the student may carry out pedagogical activities suggested by the teacher: from a simple observation exercise to the analysis of a real complex case, which will require the application and development of specific skills.

Among other goals, this project, involving several institutions (education and health institutions) from Portugal (ESEnfC), Belgium, Bulgaria, France and Italy, intends to develop the knowledge, qualifications and skills of the students, facilitating their entry into the national and European labour markets.

The Virtual Hospital project will be developed throughout a period of two years and it is expected to be completed on 15th December, 2009. It is financed by the European Commission, within the scope of the Lifelong Learning Programme – Leonardo da Vinci.
