ESEnfC professor Pedro Parreira and guest assistant professor Tânia Morgado receive Sigma’s European Awards for Nursing Excellence 2022 in the areas of Research and Clinical Practice

Pedro Parreira, Coordinating Professor of the Nursing School of Coimbra (ESEnfC), and Tânia Morgado, nurse of the Coimbra Hospital and University Centre (CHUC) and guest assistant professor of the ESEnfC, have received the Sigma’s European Awards for Nursing Excellence 2022, in the areas of Research and Clinical Practice, respectively, for their exemplary commitment to nursing work.

The recipients will receive their awards in June, in Dublin, during the Sigma 6th Biennial European Conference (held from 22 to 25 June 2022). With the 2022 awards, the teachers and researchers of the ESEnfC and its Health Sciences Research Unit: Nursing (UICISA: E) have six Sigma European awards.

Professor Pedro Parreira received the “Sigma European Research Award 2022”. In 2021, the Professor won the Prémio Empreendedorismo Professor José Adriano (Professor José Adriano Entrepreneurship Award) from the CCISP – Portuguese Polytechnics Coordinating Council and the Sigma European Recognition of Nursing Excellence in Research during COVID-19 (awarded to the research team led by him).

Tânia Morgado, nurse specialist in Mental Health and Psychiatric Nursing, working at the Child and Adolescent Psychiatry Inpatient Service of the CHUC Pediatric Hospital, and a guest assistant professor at the ESEnfC since 2008, won the “Sigma European Clinical Practice Award 2022.”

Pedro Parreira has a post-doctoral degree in Nursing Science, a Ph.D. in Management, and a Master’s degree in Organizational Behavior. He is a coordinating professor, has taught in the ESEnfC for over two decades, and is the founder of the ESEnfC’s Entrepreneurship Office, another area in which his work has stood out.

Professor Parreira is also the executive coordinator of TecCare, a strategic development axis of the UICISA: E, hosted at the ESEnfC. TecCare aims to combine knowledge and clinical practice with experimental research on health care technologies in higher education, enabling innovation and knowledge transfer and improving health care delivery to the population. He is also the author and co-author of 18 books and more than a hundred articles indexed in national and international journals.

Tânia Morgado is a Ph.D. student in Nursing with a Master’s degree in Bioethics and a postgraduate degree in Child and Adolescent Psychopathology and Psychotherapy.

She is a guest associate professor at ESEnfC, the School of Health of Leiria (since 2020), and a researcher at UICISA: E, dedicated to issues of mental health literacy in adolescents.
Tânia Morgado is a member of the Portuguese Society of Family Therapy and is currently developing specialized training in Systemic and Family Intervention.

The three previous Sigma awards

In 2020, Sigma distinguished Márcia Santos, a nurse at the CHUC Pediatric Hospital and professor at the ESEnfC, with the award in the “Clinical Practice” category.

Two years earlier, ESEnfC coordinating Professor João Apóstolo, current coordinator of the UICISA: E, received the “Sigma European Recognition Nurse Award 2018″.

More recently, three UICISA: E/ESEnfC nurses received the “Sigma European Recognition of Nursing Excellence in Research during COVID-19” award. The prize recognized the contributions of Paulo Santos-Costa, Filipe Paiva-Santos, and Cristina Costeira to the most extensive international study done in 2021 on the impact of the coronavirus SARS-CoV-2 disease on health services and the well-being of surgical patients.

Founded in 1922 in the United States of America, Sigma Theta Tau International is an honor society of nursing aimed at improving the health of populations through the scientific development of nursing practice.

The Sigma Phi Xi Chapter hosted by the ESEnfC was established in 2011. It is formed by nurses who distinguish themselves for their excellence in nursing practice, education, research, and/or leadership in national and international health and education institutions.
