Dr. António Arnaut says it is necessary to motivate health professionals

Concerned, although optimistic at the same time, Dr. António Arnaut said earlier today (30th May) that we are undergoing a «degradation of the Portuguese Health System (SNS)» and «a shifting» of its human resources «to the private sector», along with the «destruction of the health professionals' careers».

The promoter of the law which established the Portuguese Health System, attending the inaugural conference of the meeting "Managing in Times of Change", carried out at the Nursing School of Coimbra (ESEnfC), referred to the fact that «the majority of the population is nowadays employed under an individual employment contract».

On the other hand, by arguing that «Health is attractive» for private businesses, which are in expansion due to the construction of the new hospitals, whereas there is a «collapse in the public sector», the lawyer from Coimbra pointed out that we are facing «measures, which as a whole, aim at destroying the Portuguese Health System, leaving it as a leftover for the poor».

«The Portuguese Health System is not dying and there are many people who want to keep it alive», stated Arnaut, who is also a member of the group of external personages which are part of the Assembly for the Revision of the Statutes of the ESEnfC.

Dr. António Arnaut argued in favour of the fight against the wasting in the Portuguese Health System and of the regime of exclusive dedication. He also said that «it is necessary to motivate the health professionals», in view of the improvement of the life quality of the populations.

«The Portuguese Health System is alive and it is here to stay», said Arnaut, insisting on the fact that «you cannot talk about democracy if there is no equality of access» to health care offered by the government.

The goal of the meeting "Managing in Times of Change" was to reflect upon the challenges and tendencies related to Management in Health.

The organisation of initiatives of this kind is «of highest importance», in the perspective of «articulation and complementarity with other institutions, so as to guarantee the conditions for lifelong training, as well as to debate questions related to management and health», says Professor Manuela Frederico of the Organisation Commission of this meeting.
