Students from the ESEnfC in a mission in Brazil

Three students from the Nursing School of Coimbra (ESEnfC) are part of a group of 11 young people from the diocese which, in August, will be in a mission in Brazil, in the town of Chapadinha (Maranhão State), collaborating with the Criaditas dos Pobres (The Waitresses of the Poor).

They are the 4th year student Sónia Santos (parish of S. Marinho do Bispo) and the 2nd year students Sofia Marques (parish of Antanhol) and Ângela Peça (parish of Santo António dos Olivais). Other student from the School (Andreia, from the 2nd year of the course) has been involved in the preparation of the mission, but won't be able to go to Brazil.

The students from the ESEnfC will, mainly, give support at the level of training in health in a zone characterised by extreme poverty, social precariousness, early pregnancy (12/13 year-old girls), prostitution, alcoholism and by a very rudimentary health care system.

But they also intend to bring some joy that is why some members of the group have musical knowledge.

They say that what moves them is «the calling from God» and the will to «be anywhere where good things must be done».

In the last months, the students of the ESEnfC and the rest of the group of young people were trying to gather clinical material to take with them - material for the measurement of blood pressure or the capillary sugar level -, as well as the raise funds to afford their travel costs.

In order to do this, next Saturday (21st June, at 9 p.m.), at School Rainha Santa Isabel, they will promote a new activity - a Missionary Concert (see the programme) -, to gather more support.

The young people that have been trained and received spiritual preparation for the mission, will leave on 31st July and will be back on 2nd September.
