The Nursing School of Coimbra (ESEnfC) officially ends this course in a ceremony at 10 a.m. on Friday (27th June) in Campus A.

The representatives of the bodies of the ESEnfC and of the Polyvalent Socio-cultural Centre of Sao Martinho, which collaborated with the School in the Senior University project, will attend the ceremony, side by side with students, teachers and 3rd-year students of the Licentiate Degree Course undergoing an internship in Elderly Nursing.

The Senior University project started in the current academic year and it is different from the usual concept of a Senior University since the minimum age limit is 55 years old.

The most important goal of this project is for people, especially those who retired sooner, to maintain themselves useful, developing their self-esteem and acquiring knowledge in order to continue to participate in society.

For example, those who did not have the opportunity to acquire competences in the area of information technologies were able, throughout the course, to learn how to create an email or surf the Internet.

The students also practice exercise and walk around the city, visiting historical, cultural and green places.

The course programmes were based on four subjects: “Computing Technologies”, “Ageing, Society and Citizenship”, “Active Ageing/More Health” and Local and Regional History”.

This training intends to promote the development of the two primary health factors for the elderly, according to the WHO: the Self-Esteem and the Sense of Life.

The first students of the Senior University showed their interest in attending a new course, suggesting new subjects such us English, Portuguese and Interpersonal Relations.

They also suggest that more time is given to physical exercise and computing.
