The Nursing School of Coimbra (ESEnfC) acquired new equipment which allows students to simulate the difficulties felt by a hemiplegic (a patient with a one half of the body paralysed).
This simulator is a tool of experience and knowledge, perfect for Nursing teaching, since it offers future health professionals – namely those working at neurology and neurotraumatology services – the opportunity to experience what people with hemiplegia go through, understanding their limitations better and, therefore, perform their role as nurses better.
The hemiplegia simulator reproduces the change of force and mobility in one side of the body. It is composed of a vest which immobilizes an arm and half of the thorax, and an immobiliser of an inferior lower limb (hip, leg and foot).
This equipment will be very useful for students of the Post-Licentiate Course in Rehabilitation Nursing and also students of the Licentiate Course.
Hemiplegia is a limitation generally resulting from a stroke or a traumatic brain injury.
Patients with hemiplegia have a strong recovery potential.
